Our double board certified doctors at will begin to offer ketamine infusion therapy as a treatment for chronic and acute pain. The ketamine infusion in practice will block certain pain receptors in the brain and reset some nerve cells in the spine and brain. The infusion offering will act as another interventional pain management treatment for patients who either would like to avoid surgery or simply are not good candidates for a surgical procedure. Previously, ketamine infusions were an inpatient procedure lasting 24 hours a day for three consecutive days. However, by taking advantage of years of research and data, the team at Premier Pain & Spine offers ketamine infusions that last just a few hours over the same three-day span in an outpatient setting.

“I remember performing these in a hospital setting and it was extremely time consuming and inconvenient for the patient. Our treatments allow our patients to come to one of our outpatient facilities for a couple of hours for an infusion and proceed with their day as planned.” said Dr. Arpan Patel, Double Board Certified Physician and Founding Partner at Premier Pain & Spine.

“It just makes sense,” said Dr. Sunavo Dasgupta, Double Board Certified Physician and Founding Partner at Premier Pain & Spine. “Since ketamine is an anesthetic, it effectively blocks pain and sensation, and that's the result we’re aiming for,” he added. Our patients’ well-being is our top priority and while ketamine has been available to treat pain for quite some time, the necessary support for infusions just did not exist in the past.

Ketamine has been in use for decades by surgeons as an anesthetic for people and animals, but using ketamine to manage pain is still a relatively new concept. Several studies conducted show that ketamine has been used to manage pain for a number of conditions including, fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain, phantom pain, complex regional pain syndrome, postherpetic neuralgia, spinal injury, etc. In fact, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA), the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM) and the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) agree that the collective evidence has shown support for ketamine’s role in pain management. “Previously, the data just wasn't there for us to begin offering the infusion therapy to all our patients, but our team has done a significant amount of research and brought us to a point where we’re comfortable adopting ketamine infusion therapy as an offering,” said Dr. Amish Patel, Double Board Certified Physician and Founding Partner at Premier Pain & Spine.

“We’re excited to begin offering this treatment to our patients as another option to manage pain. It’s truly a new use for an old drug,” said Dasgupta. The team at Premier Pain & Spine will begin offering ketamine infusion therapy at all 4 Chicagoland locations in June of 2019. Learn more about ketamine infusion therapy here
