Phantom Limb Pain and Your Brain

Phantom limb pain is the continuing sensation of pain from a limb that has been amputated or was lost due to trauma.

This condition is extremely common after an amputation and can affect up to 85% of amputees after their initial surgery. Some patients will continue to experience this terrible pain and up to 60% will be affected for over one year. After their amputation, the cause of phantom limb pain is still unknown. However, it may be due to interrupted pain, signals and changing signals that occur at the level of the spinal cord or brain.

There are medications and therapies available to you that can reduce or eliminate this type of pain for many patients.
